| Courtyards
(private open spaces surrounded either completely
or partially by walls or buildings) have been a
popular part of home design since as early as
3000 BC, and were usually found in more temperate
climates as an important aid to cooling the house
in warm weather. Today, courtyards are
becoming more popular as homes are built in
densely populated cities. They offer privacy and
a safe place for children to play. Just about any
home style can incorporate a courtyard, but they
are typically found in European styles, such as
Spanish, French and Mediterranean homes.
