Multi-family homes are designed to house two or more families under one roof, while giving each family as much privacy as possible. Because these homes are usually built as investment property (rental income), they need to focus on affordability while remaining stylish to hold their value. The most popular multi-family style is the duplex, as seen in the examples above. Duplex plans can be mirror-images (same design on both sides) or alter-image (different design on the two sides). Alter-image duplexes are usually designed to appear as a traditional single-family home on the exterior and are usually more expensive to build.
