Vacation homes typically have one
of the following features:
Dome: The form
consists of a rigid geometric frame of metal or
plastic covered by either a flexible skin or
rigid panels. Some concrete forms have also been
built. The shape of the dome is a great advantage
for areas where snow loads and hurricane force
winds are a problem. Late 20th century.
A-Frame: Used
mostly for vacation homes or mountain retreats.
The steep gabled roof extends to ground level on
two sides, which is simple to construct and keeps
snow from accumulating, but creates awkward
interior spaces. 1957-Present
Octagon: A
contemporary design, this eight-sided building
can be one, two or even three stories high, with
a hipped, eight-sided roof and wide overhangs.
Some have porches surrounding the entire
perimeter of the building, and/or an
octagonal-shaped cupola on top, allowing light
and ventilation through the center of the
building. This can be a very light-filled, airy
house, and is mostly found in tropical locations
because of this reason.
Piling: Found
mostly near water, these homes are raised off the
ground by wooden "pilings" to
compensate for high water. The main living levels
are raised to take advantage of views from the
ocean, lake or river they are built near.
